On October 21st, Votorantim Cimentos attended the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification 12th Conference of the Parties (COP12), in the Sustainable Land Management Business Forum, in Ankara, Turkey.

The Business Forum, supported by the UNCCD (UN Convention to Combat Desertification) and the WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development), specifically focuses on sustainable land management, and the concept of Land Degradation Neutrality - a world where the amount of healthy and productive land resources necessary to support ecosystem services remains stable or increases.

Votorantim Cimentos has been invited by the WBCSD to join the panel Solution Market Place "Solutions to a land degradation neutral world". In this Panel, Patricia Montenegro, Head of Environment of Votorantim Cimentos presented the company's initiatives and progress in relation to land degradation neutrality.

Our Sustainability Commitments for 2020 contains a number of targets for 2020, three of them that are directly related to the theme. Votorantim Cimentos promotes Land Degradation Neutrality by recovering degraded areas and also by conservation of areas of high biodiversity value. Check out here an example of our initiatives.

"The cement industry obtained its raw materials substantially from nature, is conscious that it creates natural, ecological and social effects because of mining operations at raw material quarries and their surroundings. On the other hand, for the economical development the sustainability of industry is fundamental. With this awareness, the sector approaches sensitively to the issue of the recovery of the natural structures of all quarries; by redressing the natural balance, rendering them for the people or other living beings to be able to benefit from again securely and, also, prioritizes the implementation of sustainable land management", highlights Şefik Tüzün, CEO of Votorantim Cimentos Turkey.
