Votorantim Cimentos receives the 2016 Green Mine Award of Sustainability in Mining, from In The Mine magazine

Since 2014, In The Mine magazine, publication directed to the mining and aggregates industry, recognizes annually the best projects of mining companies operating in Brazil under an economic, environmental and social approach, through the Green Mine Award. This is a recognition of the commitment and responsibility of the companies awarded with the conscious use of mineral resources, conservation and environmental protection and the stakeholders involved in their production processes.

Eighteen cases were registered in the mining section and three winners selected in the Environmental Indicators category, a segment in which Votorantim Cimentos' "Slag Use as Constituents of cement produced by Votorantim Cimentos in Brazil" case was awarded. In it is shown the project developed on the use of basic slag furnace as a constituent of cements. This initiative reduces the consumption of new raw materials, among them the limestone, and offers a destination for waste from the steel and metals industries.

The use of manganese slag allowed a significant reduction in clinker factor of Votorantim Cimentos plants in southeastern Brazil. In July 2015, the clinker content of cement produced in Southeast fell to 66.3. This is an ongoing and long-term commitment of Votorantim Cimentos with the environment.

The use of slag with different characteristics is also important because it allows producing cement with specific properties to meet different market demands.

The winning cases of Green Mine Award 2016 will be published in issue 61 of In The Mine magazine and the winning companies will receive the 2016 Green Mine' seal and certificate.
