Açaí, the fruit of our energy

Today, September 5th, is Amazon Day and Açaí Day, two dates that connect in a special way and, interestingly, are part of our journey towards decarbonization.

The Amazon is one of humanity’s most valuable natural heritages, with immeasurable environmental importance. It is also home to açaí, a fruit that is a source of energy and sustenance for the region’s inhabitants and has gained worldwide fame as a “superfood.”

But what few people know is that 80% of the weight of this fruit is basically its seed. This seed, which is not consumed, is discarded in landfills or, worse, abandoned in the environment, deteriorating and generating large amounts of waste.

Faced with this problem, we saw an opportunity. We use açaí seeds as substitutes for petroleum coke in our cement production kilns, transforming them into the fruit of our energy.

This practice, known as co-processing, is one of the pillars of our decarbonization strategy. Through it, we preserve the environment, create a new inclusive production chain, foster the local economy by generating more jobs and income, and provide a cleaner and more sustainable energy matrix.

Our commitment to decarbonization, characterized by the reduction of CO2 emissions, is fundamental for us to continue evolving towards a sustainable world!
