We, from Prebetong Aridos, a company owned by Votorantim Cimentos, have received the first National Sustainable Development Award in the Gravel Pit Restoration category, awarded by the Federación de Áridos, for its restoration work on the gravel pit Rincón de Caya in Badajoz, Spain.

The pit, which has been operating since 2006 and was acquired by Votorantim Cimentos in 2012, has 216 hectares of expansion, in which are extracted different types of sand and gravel, used for concrete production. It is expected to be extracted 100,000 tons of aggregates per year.

Rincón de Caya’s restoration is performed simultaneously with the exploration of the pit, without waiting for the exhaustion of the reserves. This procedure makes the gravel deposit as an example of how an active exploration may allocate part of the areas restored to other economic activities such as agriculture and livestock, in Rincón de Caya’s case, the restoration plan involves the planting of corn.

We care for the continuity of our processes, once the already explored areas will bring new long-term benefits. For this reason, the field was also selected to compete for awards of Asociación Europea de Áridos (UEPG).

In addition, we, from Prebetong Aridos, have received second place in the Security category for the Xove site. Since our arrival to the Spanish market, we established the goal of strengthening our commitment to safety as one of the main company values, performing a program of prevention and awareness among our employees.
